This special report provides valuable insight into key developments in the clearing of derivatives globally, including assessments of the like impact of regulatory change on market infrastructures, intermediaries and end-users.

Central clearing was quickly seen as a vital tool in the armoury of global regulators seeking to address the causes of the financial crisis five years ago. While it has taken some time for regulations to be formulated and agreed upon, the industry is now in the implementation phase of rules within Dodd-Frank and EMIR which are having a significant impact on firms’ operations. This publication seeks to help clarify some of these critical developments.

The fourteenth publication in the series, Derivatives 2011 provides a useful insight into major industry developments around the world and their impact on market intermediaries as well as their customers and others involved in derivatives markets.

The derivatives industry is facing a critical time in its development. The distinct silos of listed and OTC markets are beginning to integrate at least from a clearing point of view.  The regulatory push towards central counterparty (CCP) clearing of OTC products is already seeing results, with clearing houses and sell-side institutions embracing the move. Execution is next on the list.

This publication provides an overview of key industry issues affecting both the sell-side and the buy-side, including regulation, OTC clearing, trends in technology, exchange developments and new markets. Many challenges lie ahead but the futures and options industry is ready to meet those face on.

April 2010 FIA Market Access Risk Management Recommendations
The FIA has issued a report that recommends a number of principles for managing the risks in direct access to exchanges. This type of arrangement has become increasingly common among derivatives exchanges in many parts of the world. The report recommends that exchanges establish certain risk controls and apply those risk controls across all trading firms. This will ensure a level playing field in terms of the latency of trading and avoid creating competitive pressures among clearing firms and trading firms to reduce the latency of trading by applying fewer risk controls. The report was drafted by a working group consisting of representatives from derivatives exchanges, clearing firms and trading firms.
