International Derivatives Week – London – Monday 17 to Friday 21 June 2002

This year’s International Derivatives Week reaffirmed its status as one of the key showcases for the derivatives industry in Europe. Hundreds of visitors both from the world’s major financial markets and developing countries were drawn to the event. Intrinsic to this established forum is the International Derivatives Conference, which precedes the FOW’s European Derivatives Exhibition and the Charity Party (organised by The London Clearing House).

One of the events marking the start of International Derivatives Week was a lunch and regulatory '"round-table" hosted by The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor and representatives of the Corporation of London. Guests attending this event included The Hon James E. Newsome, Chairman of the Commodities & Futures Commission; David Wright, Director of Financial Markets of the European Commission; and senior representatives from the Financial Services Authority, European exchanges and international firms. Roy Leighton, Chairman of the FOA, and Anthony Belchambers, its Chief Executive, chaired the meeting.

An evening reception at Lancaster House, hosted by Mr Nigel Griffiths MP, Parliamentary Secretary of State for the Department of Trade & Industry, and Roy Leighton, was the second event to open International Derivatives Week. Among the 200 guests who attended were senior representatives from exchanges, clearing houses, financial institutions and commodities houses from Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America, trade associations, government and parliament. The active presence of Nigel Griffiths represented Her Majesty’s Government’s acknowledgement of the important role derivatives has in today’s financial and commodity markets.

The International Derivatives Conference was held at the Great Eastern Hotel between Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th June. John Damgard, President of the FIA, and Roy Leighton introduced the new two-day conference. This new compact format introduced more guest speakers and fewer, yet more focussed, high level panel sessions, which involved inviting senior industry representatives to comment from the floor on issues addressed by the panel speakers. This year looked at the changing market structure, with particular attention to energy and equity derivatives and clearing.

Guest speakers included:

Don Cruickshank, Chairman, London Stock Exchange
Rudolf Ferscha, Chief Executive, Eurex AG
David Hardy, Chief Executive, London Clearing House
James E Newsome, Chairman, Commodity Futures Trading Commission
Sir Bob Reid, Chairman, IPE

International Derivatives Week also included events to celebrate the 10th Anniversary CME/Globex; the 15th Anniversary of FOW and numerous receptions, dinners, seminars and meetings.

FOW’s 12th European Derivatives Exhibition

The end of Derivatives Week saw FOW’s 12th European Derivatives Exhibition at the Barbican. Once again, a range of exhibitors from software vendors, training companies to international exchanges took part. Despite the sad demise of the England football team on the Friday morning some 1500 visitors came along to update themselves on the latest developments in the industry.

The seminar programme was well attended and focused strongly on the practical changes required by the industry. Highlights included the keynote address, a summary of the earlier FOA/FIA conference by Roy Leighton and Emma Davey focusing on dramatic changes in the derivatives markets, sessions on credit derivatives and the exchange technology panel focusing on a call for innovation and reliability.

The Bootleggers Bash - a 'Hit' for Charity

The LCH Charity Party again completed a very successful International Derivatives Week this year.

With a change of venue this year to The Park Lane Hotel, nearly 400 people enjoyed the 'Bootlegger's Bash'. Although the theme was Al Capone and Prohibition, guests were welcomed with a choice of cocktails before enjoying dinner.

Ventriloquist Paul Zerdin, with his 'friends' Sam and Albert, provided hilarious entertainment and guests were able to enjoy a series of games, with the ever popular casino proving a hit yet again. A live band and disco provided the opportunity for those present to show their prowess on the dance floor.

Five charities will benefit from the £29,000 raised - Macmillan Cancer Relief, Brook Hospital for Animals, Trident Trust, Live Music Now and Teenage Cancer Trust.
