Sponsors: Eurex, Liffe NYSE Euronext and LCH.Clearnet Steve Sparke and Anthony Belchambers had great pleasure in welcoming a distinguished audience to the thirteenth City Debate which has become established as one of the City's more entertaining, and intellectually stimulating, debating forums. During this time the Debate has become established as an informative and highly entertaining event, providing the City's wholesale financial services community with the opportunity of coming together each year to address an issue which has the potential to affect the current and future development of the industry. The theme for 2008 continued this tradition – with the Debate focusing on the whether short termism is the Achilles Heel of the market economy. The FOA welcomed an illustrious panel to argue both for and against the motion – “Short Termism is Bad for Business”. Will Hutton, Chief Executive, The Work Foundation and Terry Smith, Chief Executive, Tullett Prebon spoke in favour of the motion while Professor Ian Angell, London School of Economics and David Lascelles, Senior Fellow, Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation argued the contrary. The proceedings were skillfully managed by the Rt Hon Michael Portillo, who acted as Moderator for the second year running. All Guest speakers put forward some very compelling arguments but Professor Angell and David Lascelles proved the more persuasive and saw their percentage of the votes increase from 34% to an impressive 60% leaving them as the victors of the Debate. City Debate Results:
The FOA is grateful to The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor, Alderman David Lewis, and former Lord Mayors, for allowing the City Debate to take place at the Mansion House – the ‘home' of the Debate since its introduction in 1996. The City Debate could also not take place without the generosity of its sponsors and our grateful thanks go to Eurex, Liffe NYSE Euronext and LCH.Clearnet for their continued support. It has become a tradition of the Debate that a donation to charity is made from the proceeds from the evening. The nominated charity in 2008 is the Lord Mayor's Appeal – ‘Investing in Healthy Lives, Healthy Vision, Healthy Futures' Sharing Skills, Changing Lives' – which is supporting 2 charities. The Wellbeing of Women and ORBIS (a founding member of ‘Vision 2020 – the right to sight').
